Vapers, We Care About You and Your Health. Stay Hydrated!
by Jason
Many Vapers are unaware of the dangers that they create for themselves by not knowing best vaping practices. At Vape Escapes, we are all about promoting safety in the vaping community and I’d like to share a personal experience in case it may help you. When I switched from smoking to vaping, I found myself overly thirsty, particularly when chain-vaping, and wondered if dehydration was the reason. I learned that dehydration is a common issue for Vapers, especially for those who live in the desert like us – not to mention that we are rolling in to the hot summer months. Although dehydration is commonplace among the general population with rates reaching 60% on any given day, Vapers need to be even more aware of how they can avoid it. There are a few signs you can watch for to know if your body is dehydrated. Cottonmouth is one of the most common, but also darker urine, feeling tired, dry eyes, headache, muscle cramps and/or increased thirst may indicate that you need to replenish water in your body.
Becoming dehydrated is an issue that many vapers deal with, especially those new to vaping. Our e-juice contains four ingredients: Propylene Glycol (PG), Vegetable Glycerin, nicotine and flavor. The PG serves as a humectant or hygroscopic substance; meaning that it helps to retain the moisture of the e-juice by drawing water particles from the air. It also plays a vital role in the process of converting the e-juice into vapor. It’s totally safe and in fact, PG is used in tons of medicines and foods (looking at you, ice cream). One of the side effects of PG being such an amazing humectant is that it does a really great job absorbing moisture, not only from the air, but also from your mouth when you vape. PG holds onto water molecules and keeps your body from absorbing some of them, which can cause you to become more dehydrated. Some other examples of hygroscopic substances are sugar, caramel, honey and table salt, and there are examples of why this can be good. For example, if you have ever eaten a moist cake, that is the PG holding in the moisture and keeping the cake from drying out.
Consuming more water is the best solution to fixing dehydration. Most people know about the “eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day” rule when it comes to drinking water. But if you are vaping, we recommend you drink more than 8 glasses of water per day, since vaping may contribute to dehydration. Don’t like plain water? No problem, add some fresh lemons, limes or cucumbers for more pizzazz! There are a variety of calorie-free water flavor enhancers available, too. Other suggestions include eating more fruits and vegetables, drinking water while vaping, staying away from caffeinated drinks and sodas (these types of fluids pull water from the body and promote dehydration), and possibly trying an e-juice with a lower PG ratio.
If that’s not enough reasons to drink more water, consider this:
- Hydrated skin = fewer wrinkles
- Natural mood lifter
- Good for colon health
- Overeating prevention
- Cleanses toxins
- Increases memory function
- Fights illness
Drinking more water is good for your overall well-being and health, but it also helps to refresh the palate and keeps you hydrated when vaping.
